Apply for social security cover when working abroad – as employee

When you work abroad, you must always apply for a decision on social security.

This also applies if you, for example, is going on a short business trip, conference and the like, if you are going on an internship abroad, if you are self-employed etc.

The A1 certificate is documentation of the Danish authorities' decision that you are covered by the Danish rules on social security when working abroad. It is issued when you apply for the decision on Danish social security.

Many foreign authorities have a requirement that posted employees can document their right to Danish social security when they temporarily perform work in the country in question. If the A1 certificate is missing, both you and your employer may risk being fined by the foreign authorities. Some countries may deny access to the workplace if the certificate is missing.
