Veterinary surgeon (temporary provision)

The decision on whether or not to issue an authorization will be made as soon as possible after all the necessary documents are received at the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. Usually you can expect to get an answer from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration within four weeks.

If a decision cannot be made within four weeks, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration will contact you and inform you when you can expect an answer on your application.

The authorisation is not to be regarded as granted if the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has not replied within the set time.

However, with regard to non-EU citizens one can expect an answer later than within four weeks.

In case of rejection

If the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration decides to refuse your application for authorization, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration will send you a reasoned decision.

If you disagree with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration’s decision to refuse your application for authorization as a veterinary surgeon, you have the right to appeal the decision. The deadline for submitting an appeal is four weeks from the date of which the decision was announced.

The appeal must be submitted to the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, which will forward it to the Danish Appeal Board, Miljø- og Fødevareklagenævnet.

Other requirements apply for non-EU citizens. To work as a veterinary surgeon in Denmark, an authorization is required. In order to receive a Danish authorization as a veterinary surgeon, you need to fulfil the requirements mentioned in Consolidation Act No. 40 of 15. January 2020 on veterinary surgeons, Article 3, Paragraph 3, which states that your education needs to be equivalent to the education in veterinary medicine provided by the University of Copenhagen.

There is no specific application form - you apply by submitting the documents listed below.

You will have to provide The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration with the following information:

• Proof of name, date of birth and nationality (preferably a copy of relevant passport pages).

• Curriculum vitae.

• Diploma/certificate.

• Transcript, mark sheets or similar list of subjects passed.

• Documentation for the current authorization as a veterinarian in your home country.

• Documentation for your previous work experience as a veterinarian.

• Certificate of Good Professional Standing (not more than one year old).

• Curriculum, syllabus/course description for all periods of your study program, admission requirements, literature, exams description.

The documentation must be provided in the form of original documents or as certified copies in the original language as well as in Danish or English translation, confirmed by a public authority, embassy, trade organization or similar. Individuals cannot certify copies. All translations must be made by an authorized translator.
