This section describes how to apply for a new chauffeur license, whether it’s your first license or because your older license has expired with no possibility of renewal, or because your documentation for professional qualification isn’t valid. If you have valid documentation or a valid license, look at the section below about application for renewal.
To be approved for a new chauffeur license, you need to pass the requirements for:
- Health
- Criminal record and good repute
- Age
You need to be 21 years of age. - Driving experience
Your driving license must be at least three years old. - Professional qualification
You need to pass the relevant course at an approved school.
Note that to apply for a chauffeur license, you need a Danish civil registration number (CPR number) for administrative and identificatory reasons. For further information about this, you can contact the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Interior. You also need NemID, for which you can contact Nets.
The first step is to enlist at an approved school that offers the relevant course. A list of schools can be found here (open new window).
To pass the course that qualifies you to perform commercial passenger transport, you need to fulfill the minimum language requirements for Danish, corresponding to the level in “Prøve i Dansk 2”. It is the school that determines whether this requirement is fulfilled.
The school will apply on your behalf, but you need to log in here (open new window) to give consent to the processing of your criminal record and health records. You must await the school before this step.
After receiving your application and your consent, the Danish Road Traffic Authority is ready to start processing your case and receive your medical certificate, which needs to be the official form provided by the Danish Road Traffic Authority, which can be found here (open new window). It must be less than three months old, issued by your own doctor and sent in a sealed envelope to:
The Danish Road Traffic Authority
Sorsigvej 35
6760 Ribe
Denmark
If possible, your doctor can also send us the medical certificate by digital mail. If relevant, you can send additional health information such as information about diabetes. The form for diabetes can be found here (open new window).
If you have lived or live in another country, you also need to send your criminal record from that country. The record must be original and sent by post to the Danish Road Traffic Authority by the proper authority itself. You cannot have been in contact with this record.
The average processing time is eight weeks, but it can be longer in complicated cases where there are concerns and issues with health and/or the criminal record. The Danish Road Traffic Authority may also need additional information. If this is the case, a request for this will be sent by digital mail to your e-Boks.
The answer to your application will also be sent by digital mail to your e-Boks, after which you need to pay the administrative fee to have the license issued to your stated address. After payment, it takes 2-3 weeks for the license to arrive and you can and see the fees here (open new window).
The chauffeur license may be valid for up to five years depending on the individual case, and it is valid within the borders of Denmark. You must remember to renew your license following the instructions below, if you wish to continue working as a chauffeur for commercial passenger transport.
How to apply for a replacement of your chauffeur license if you lose it or need to make changes to it
If you have lost your chauffeur license, it is possible to apply for a replacement.
It is also possible to apply for a replacement, if you need to make changes to it, for example changes to your name.
When applying for the replacement of your license, it does not make changes to the time and dates of validity, and you need to pay the fee before it is issued. It will be issued to the address that you have stated in your application. After payment, it takes 2-3 weeks for the replacement to arrive.
You can apply for the replacement here (open new window) and see the fees here (open new window).
