If you are covered by a public sector maternity/paternity scheme, you will be partially or fully exempt from paying to Barsel.dk.

Employees can either be covered by a municipal maternity/paternity leave scheme or Den Statslige Barselsfond.

Municipal maternity/paternity leave

Employees can either be covered by a municipal maternity/paternity leave scheme or Den Statslige Barselsfond.

Municipal maternity/paternity leave scheme

When your company is covered by a municipal maternity/paternity leave scheme and all employees are covered by that, you will be exempt from paying to Barsel.dk. How it is done:

  1. The municipality must say it is OK Barsel.dk can only remove your company from the scheme once you have sent documentation proving that the company is part of a municipal maternity/paternity leave scheme. Therefore, the municipality your company is registered in must sign a declaration that all of your employees are covered by the municipal scheme.

  2. You must Send a copy of a mail/screenshot of a confirmation from a municipality where they certify that your company is covered by a municipal/regional maternity/paternity leave scheme for all employees. Ensure that your SE number and start date for the scheme is included in the information. Send Digital Post to Barsel.dk (requires MitID)

  3. Barsel.dk will Barsel.dk will send you a letter once we have received the confirmation from you and registered that your company is exempt from the scheme from the specified date. At the same time, Barsel.dk will annul any potential outstanding payment orders and will, if relevant, reimburse you for any contributions and potentially ask for past reimbursements to be repaid. Your company is exempt from Barsel.dk as long as all employees in the company are covered by the municipal maternity/paternity leave scheme.

Den Statslige Barselsfond

When all employees are covered by Den Statslige Barselsfond, your company is exempt from making payments to Barsel.dk. In such cases, companies can also not be reimbursed by Barsel.dk.

For schools

All schools are covered by Den Statslige Barselsfond and thus exempt from Barsel.dk.

For schools with kindergartens

Schools with kindergartens must be registered as partially covered by Barsel.dk when:

  • the school includes an associated kindergarten and

  • the school has a teacher or an assistant teacher (‘pædagog/pædagogmedhjælper’ in Danish) who spends the majority of working hours in the kindergarten.

You must report and pay to Barsel.dk

When your company is partially covered by Barsel.dk, you must calculate, report and pay contributions for the employees that are not part of Den Statslige Barselsfond.

Barsel.dk does not know the identities of these employees or the scope of their employment. Therefore, we are unable to calculate the contribution that you must pay.

Partially covered companies are obliged to report to Barsel.dk on a quarterly basis.
